Do you tip movers?

Should you tip movers at all? You don't have to. Tipping movers isn't required, but it's customary when the service is good, so it's your call. Not everyone can tip, and a tight budget is a real limit.

A tip is never part of our price. You pay for the crew and the truck by the hour, plus GST, with nothing built in for tips. Our Calgary movers' rates page lists the rates and their conditions, and our residential movers in Calgary page covers what a home move includes.

How much to tip movers: what the guides suggest

We didn't find a Canadian consumer guide that suggests amounts, so these figures come from three US consumer guides, in US dollars:

Guide What it suggests
ConsumerAffairs $20 to $50 per mover as a standard tip; $5 to $10 per mover per hour for a short local move; $40 to $100 per mover for a full-day move
NerdWallet 10% to 20% of the total moving cost, or $4 to $15 per mover per hour
Move.org $5 to $10 per hour for each mover, or 15% to 20% of the moving cost

Not every guide likes percentages. ConsumerAffairs says the standard 20% tip doesn't typically fit moves, because a move already costs so much. Working it out per mover, by the hour or by the day, keeps the number tied to the work.

How to tip your movers

  • Cash, straight to the crew. ConsumerAffairs suggests cash given directly to the crew, so you know the movers actually get it.
  • Each mover, or the crew lead. You can give the whole tip to the crew lead to split, or give each mover their own. Move.org prefers tipping each mover over one lump sum to the lead.
  • At the end of the job. On a one-day move, the most common time is once the job is done and you're settling up.
  • Drinks and a simple meal. Drinks or a simple meal like pizza are a thoughtful way to say thanks. Skip alcohol while the crew is working.

When to tip more, or less

Guides suggest a bigger tip when the job is harder: tight spaces, lots of stairs, heavy or awkward items, or severe weather. If the crew was late, careless with your things or unprofessional, a smaller tip or none at all is reasonable.

Stairs, long days and snow come up in Calgary moves. Here's how three of our customers described days like that, in their own words:

"They were organized, courteous, and incredibly hard-working—even with the heavy lifting and tricky stairways, they never once complained and kept a positive attitude throughout the day."

Sadia, September 2025, Google review

"They worked super hard ALL day and ended up putting in 11 hours of work to move all of our stuff."

Katie, September 2024, Google review

"Moving at the best of times can be very stressful. Add an unexpected snowfall and things could go haywire. Working with Raphael was so seamless and ended up being an enjoyable day."

How much to tip movers on a long-distance move

NerdWallet, a US guide, says it's customary to tip more on a long-distance move than on a local one, typically $50 to $100 per mover per day. When one crew loads and another unloads, ConsumerAffairs suggests tipping half at pickup and half at delivery.

With us, the same crew loads your home, drives it and unloads it at the other end. Here's how we run these trips: long-distance moving.
