Case study
A couch over the balcony in Airdrie
In September 2026, we moved a client out of a rental unit in Airdrie. Her couch wouldn't fit down the stairs, so it left over the balcony railing. Here's how the day came together, from a booking made about eight weeks ahead to a move-out inspection planned for 5:00 pm.
The job at a glance
- When: September 2026. She booked about eight weeks before moving day.
- Where: her rental unit in Airdrie
- What we moved: her furniture. She planned to take her boxes and small items over herself the day before.
- The problem: the couch wouldn't go down the stairs
- The deadline: the move-out inspection, which her landlord planned for 5:00 pm that day
On the balcony
Before the couch came out, a moving blanket went over the railing.
Wrapped in plastic, the couch goes up onto the padded rail.
Two movers guide it over the edge.
What made it tricky
The stairs.
The couch wouldn't fit down them, so it had to leave another way.
A fixed end to the day.
The inspection was planned for 5:00 pm, and she wanted time to clean before it.
Both ends.
She told us the couch would have to go into her new unit the same way, so the crew knew before moving day.
How we planned it
She accepted our estimate in early August, about eight weeks before the move. In late August she wrote that her landlord was looking to schedule the move-out inspection for 5:00 pm on moving day. She asked roughly when the crew would arrive, so she could leave time to clean, and we planned to be there at around 8:30 to 9:00 am.
Two days before the move, she wrote again. She would take her boxes and small items over herself the day before, leaving only the furniture for our crew, and she reminded us about the couch. We replied that the crew was bringing straps, and that our goal was to be there closer to 8:30 am.
In her words
"That's perfect and what I was hoping for."
The client, replying to our planned arrival time
"The couch will need to be removed by using the balcony and it will have to go into my new unit the same way. I just wanted to be sure the crew is aware and will have the supplies they need to be able to do it safely."
The client, by email, two days before the move
What this means for your move
Some furniture comes apart to fit through a door, and some needs another way out. If a piece won't make it down the stairs or into the elevator, tell us on our quote form. Say what floor it's on and how it got in, and we'll plan for it.
